black bean explosion?

We went to the River Oak for Children Spring Ball on Saturday night, and each person at the table brought home a tall vase filled with a "lucky bamboo" that was propped up with dried black beans.

I took ours to work, and my coworker told me to add water to the bamboo. I did this at the end of the day.

I just got an e-mail from Julie that reads:

Subject: Don't Water Your Bamboo
I had dinner tonight with several friends who sent to Spring Ball on Saturday. Two of them brought home the lucky bamboo centerpieces and filled them with water - only to have the black beans inside cause the vase to explode all over their kitchens. They had hilarious stories and wonder how many people had the same thing happen!


OH NOOOOOOOOO..what is my office going to look like tomorrow? At least I put them on the round table in the middle of my office, and I don't keep anything else on that table. Why didn't I think of what would naturally happen by adding water to black beans?
